Fan Coil Testing

h1

Ability's dedicated fan coil testing facility enables consultants, contractors and building owners to evaluate fan coil performance before installation and commissioning. By replicating real-world operating conditions, our testing services provide confidence that a proposed design will deliver the required acoustic performance, airflow rates, heating and cooling outputs. From acoustic and volumetric testing through to thermal performance validation and witness testing, our team works with clients to verify system performance and support successful project delivery.

What is Fan Coil Unit testing?

Fan coil unit testing uses specialist equipment to assess fan coil performance under controlled conditions that replicate real-world installations. Testing enables project teams to verify that a proposed system design will achieve the required acoustic performance, airflow rates, pressure drops and heating and cooling outputs before installation on site.

By identifying potential issues early in the process, testing helps reduce risk, improve confidence and support efficient project delivery.

Our Testing Services

Acoustic & Volumetric Performance Testing

We install an exact replica of your proposed fan coil design within our testing laboratory, allowing performance to be evaluated under realistic operating conditions.

Testing can be undertaken for:

  • Commercial applications with exposed or concealed fan coil units
  • Residential installations above bathrooms or within bulkheads
  • Multi-room configurations where the fan coil and discharge are located in separate spaces

Testing equipment includes:

  • Manometers for external static resistance measurement
  • Bolometer hoods for airflow measurement
  • Reverberant speakers for reverberation analysis
  • Sound level meters for sound pressure testing

This enables accurate assessment of noise levels, air distribution and overall system performance.

Thermal Performance Testing

Our dedicated thermal testing laboratory allows precise measurement of heating and cooling performance within a controlled environment.

  • Performance data includes:
  • Heating and cooling outputs
  • Water flow rates and return temperatures
  • Room temperature and humidity levels
  • Coil pressure drops for accurate pump sizing
  • Condensate measurement to calculate latent cooling

Data is continuously recorded throughout testing to provide a comprehensive understanding of system performance.

Witness Testing

Ability offers client witness testing at our dedicated facility in Poole, Dorset. Using project drawings and layouts, we replicate ductwork arrangements, grille locations and key system elements, allowing project teams to observe and verify testing first hand. Witness testing provides confidence that:

  • Acoustic performance meets specification requirements
  • Airflow and pressure characteristics are validated
  • Heating and cooling outputs are achieved
  • The proposed design can deliver the intended performance prior to installation

Upon completion, clients receive a detailed report containing:

  • Test results
  • Photographs
  • Layout drawings
  • Calibration certificates
