Horizontal Fan Units
Horizontal fan coil units (FCUs) are installed at ceiling level to provide heating and cooling for the space below. They can either be concealed behind suspended ceilings, bulkheads, or exposed with all parts visible, including the controls and ducting.

Types of horizontal fan coil units
Featuring EC motors, optimised coils and an array of filter options, the EVO fan coil range from Ability by Dimplex can be configured to suit residential, commercial and hotel applications. A choice of horizontal unit depths ranging from 155 to 270mm and numerous width options, allows product selections to closely match design requirements, reducing the risk of oversizing.
Every EVO unit is equipped with high-efficiency heat exchange coils configured to maximise both cooling and heating output. Each coil is specifically tuned to the unit it is paired with ensuring optimal performance.
The EVO270 is a slim and versatile horizontal fan coil unit that forms the core of the EVO horizontal chassis design. Since 2002, it has become known for its efficiency and flexibility across many applications. At just 270 mm high, it fits easily into most ceiling spaces while still delivering strong performance. Variants include the EVO270R for residential use with enhanced acoustic performance, and the EVO270P, which is optimised for low-temperature hot water systems such as heat pumps.
The EVO range also features more compact horizontal fan coil units. Models include the EVO235 and EVO235R (235 mm deep), with the EVO235R tailored for residential use. The EVO170 is a 170 mm deep unit tailored for hotel applications, featuring a revised coil design and remote-mounted controls.
The most compact option is the EVO155 at just 155 mm deep, delivering performance comparable to larger units while offering a highly efficient and flexible solution for projects with tight space constraints.

Witness testing: Supporting the specification of Ability horizontal fan coil units
At Ability by Dimplex, we carry out comprehensive testing of our horizontal fan coil units at a dedicated facility in our factory in Poole, Dorset. We also offer witness testing, providing clients with complete transparency and confidence in the testing process and results relevant to their project.
Using the client’s drawings, we replicate ductwork layouts, grille locations and other system elements in our testing laboratory. By matching the horizontal fan coil unit selection, the testing results enable specifiers and contractors to validate design choices, confirm compliance with project requirements and fine-tune the fan coil system design before on-site installation and commissioning.
FCU testing includes:
- Acoustic testing: Confirms that sound levels meet specification, ensuring the acoustic performance of the installed fan coil units is as expected.
- Volumetric performance testing: Verifies airflow, air resistance and pressure drops to streamline fan coil commissioning.
- Thermal performance testing: Demonstrates heating and cooling outputs, fan coil performance and condensate management, ensuring the finished design delivers both comfort and efficiency.
All FCU testing is carried out using high-quality, regularly calibrated testing equipment. Once the horizontal fan coil testing is complete, clients receive a detailed report that includes test results, photographs, layout drawings and calibration certificates.
